By 2020, 66% of new global connections will be smartphone users. As of 2017, an estimated two-thirds of the world's population had a mobile device. In just over a decade, the mobile device industry has skyrocketed and equipment that was once reserved for the elite few has now become a lifeline for many. This made the task of extracting and parsing that data much more difficult for digital forensics professionals. Flip phones, the most common device at the time, only stored 5mb of data-so little that law enforcement officers could log the contacts and photos on it by hand.īut as mobile phones grew in functionality, complexity, and popularity, the devices developed the capacity to hold significantly more data. When digital forensics was introduced to the law enforcement field in the early 2000s, pulling data from a mobile phone was relatively easy, if not time-consuming. ![]()
